The Smurfs is an American animated television series that aired on NBC from September 12, 1981 to December 2, 1989. Made by Hanna-Barbera, it is based on the Belgian comic series by the same name, created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo (who also served as Story Supervisor of this adaptation) and aired for 256 episodes with a total of 421 individual stories. During season 4, it was rivaled by a similar series, Snorks, which only survived for 4 seasons.
The series began airing on Cartoon Network in 1992 and also aired on Boomerang. During syndication, the short season 4 introduction sequence replaced all intros due to time constrictions. Also, seasons 8 and 9 were omitted from the channels. As a result, the executives of both Cartoon Network and Boomerang only required the first 7 seasons. Despite this, all seasons are available on the Boomerang app.
The Smurfs was (and still is) considered a very popular cartoon series, as remembered by those that watched it during their childhood back in the 1980s.
