Synopsis[]

Staying true to its self-referential and meta comedic roots that endeared The Amazing World of Gumball to fans around the world, the movie begins when Gumball’s biggest fan finds the show’s missing episode and accidentally opens a portal connecting his world to Gumball’s cartoon world. Upon meeting his heroes, our super fan decides to team up with Gumball, Darwin, Anais, Richard and Nicole to save them from a nefarious force overtaking Elmore, while inadvertently unleashing a threat of their very own. Utilizing the latest animation techniques and CG technology, the movie promises to be both a comedic, emotional, and epic conclusion for fans of the original series and a new beginning in establishing the world for the accompanying series.[1]

Production[]

In October 2015, The Amazing World of Gumball creator Ben Bocquelet told The Times that he was interested in creating a film based on the series.[2] In the following years, Bocquelet would go on to say that he doubted a film would be made due to his departure in 2016, but that he had planned two drafts for potential direct-to-video and theatrical films for the show.[3][4] In October 2018, Cartoon Network confirmed that a script for a movie based on The Amazing World of Gumball was being written.[5]

Following the series finale of The Amazing World of Gumball, and the mixed reviews it received from fans, Bocquelet said that the planned film would resolve its cliffhanger. The film was officially announced to be in development on February 17, 2021, under the working title The Amazing World of Gumball Movie. On September 21, 2021, HBO Max and Cartoon Network announced the film had been greenlit and was now titled The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie!, alongside a new series for Cartoon Network and HBO Max.[6]

On August 22th, 2022, after a huge restructuring at HBO Max, it was announced that the movie, while still in production, wouldn't premiere on the streaming service as originally intended.[7]

Nothing was heard about the movie until almost ten months later when, at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Ben Boqcuelet was asked about the movie during a Q&A session. He confirmed that the movie is still being worked on, with the story and script currently being revised.[8]
