Monsters ate my birthday cake is a puzzle game released on July, 1st 2014 developed by American indie studio SleepNinja Games and published by Cartoon Network for PC and mobile devices.


Plot[]

Upon waking up on his birthday Niko discovers the birthday cake his parents left for him is missing. Niko and his pet dog Bazooka notice a trail of crumbs that leads outside his village into Nogports meadows. There Niko meets a monster named Groggnar who tells him that mean monsters called Boogins have been causing trouble all over Gogapole Island by their king Big Boogin and that they are likely the cause of Niko's stolen birthday cake. Niko teams up with Groggnar and his monster friends Claude, Eek and many more to put an end to the Big Boogin's reign of terror on the island and recover Niko's birthday cake.

GamePlay[]

The player takes control of Niko at the start of every level. Every level is a maze in which Niko and the monsters need to navigate throughout in order to collect pieces of the birthday cake which will advance to the next level. In the mazes obstacles consist of Boogins enemies, dead ends & traps that will require a specific monster power to clear or switches that need to be activated, Gates that need keys to open. In the levels the player will cycle through the characters to use their abilities such as breaking crystal barriers, stunning Boogins, tunneling under dirt ECT. Upon beating a level the player earns a star, Stars are required to access levels, if the player does not have the needed amount of stars they cannot proceed. Additional stars can be obtained by completing specific challenges in the level (beating the level without defeating any Boogins, collect all the coins, finish within a set amount of time ECT)  Coins can be used for unlocking costumes, side quest items and optional stars which can be purchased in shops on the level map. The player can browse Niko's village and talk to the human residents for hints, optional side quest and humorous dialogue.

Trivia[]

  • Cartoon Network initially posted trailers and promos for Monsters ate my birthday cake when it launched, sometime in the late 2010's however those videos were set to private. Social media post for the game can still be found though,and is listed on Cartoon Network's Steam category
  • Groggnar shows resemblance to Eduardo, a character from Foster's home of imaginary friends.
  • Steam has trading cards, emojis and backgrounds featuring characters from the game.
  • The Game's dialogue & humor is reminiscent of shows airing at the time of its release namely Adventure Time, Clarence and The amazing world of Gumball.
  • Monsters ate my birthday cake has an Easter egg for Adventure Time, A Finn the Human costume can be unlocked and to obtain it requires an item designed after BMO.
  • It's unknown if a series about the the game was ever considered.
