Notable Events[]

  • January 24-25: The Big Game XXVI: Tom vs. Jerry premiere.
  • March 2: The branding of the network transitions from Starburst (with the Checkerboard bumpers) to Powerhouse. However, the bumpers and promos from the Checkerboard and Starburst eras are still used until April.
  • March 14: Cartoon Network airs a marathon named 50 Greatest Cartoons of All Time.
  • April 6: The Bugs and Daffy Show was given a new introduction sequence, made exclusively for the network. Unlike the original intro sequence featuring the stalk Looney Tune characters appearing in front of the Checkerboard background, this new sequence is fully animated.
  • September 7: Tom and Jerry was given a new introduction sequence, made exclusively for the network. The backgrounds were CG animated while the characters are in 2D animation.
  • October 24-25: Cartoon Network airs a 25-hour marathon of Scooby-Doo, titled Those Meddling Kids: 25 Hours of Doo, in 24 hours thanks to the Daylight Savings time change which added an extra hour to the day.
  • November: Ed, Edd n Eddy was supposed to premiere during the fall of '98, but was postponed to January 4, 1999 due to production issues.
