In 1991, Ted Turner was planning to make a 24-hour cable television station exclusively for cartoons. He was thinking a name for the station, so he asked some of other people around the Turner Entertainment Networks headquarters for a potential name. Some have said the name was originally going to be "Cartoon City". Some have said the name was going to be "Turner Kids". But then, Turner made a decision. He now had a title idea for the station, and that title was "The Cartoon Network". The employees liked it, but they told Turner to drop the "The" in the name because just "Cartoon Network" made it more cleaner and recognizable. Next, they had to figure out the logo for the station. Turner drew the logo as just a large donut circle with the name wrapped around the central hole. But then, in 1992, the logo changed to a black and white checkerboard design. Promos soon began to air to inform television viewers that Cartoon Network was due to launch on October 1st and was going to air cartoons from Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera and MGM, along with various Popeye cartoons. Before the logo change, Turner Broadcasting released a press video to cable operators explaining why customers will want to buy Cartoon Network and add it to their channel line-ups.
