Charlie Brown was feeling miserable. He had a bad cold, and he had to stay in bed all day. He missed school, he missed his friends, and he missed playing baseball. He felt like nothing could cheer him up.
He heard a knock on the door. It was Snoopy, his faithful dog. Snoopy had a red scarf around his neck and a basket in his mouth. He wagged his tail and put the basket on Charlie Brown's bed. Charlie Brown opened the basket and saw a thermos of hot soup, a box of tissues, a comic book, and a card. The card said: "Get well soon, from your best friend, Snoopy."
Charlie Brown smiled. He felt a little better. He thanked Snoopy and gave him a hug. Snoopy licked his face and curled up next to him. Charlie Brown sipped the soup, wiped his nose, and read the comic book. He laughed at the funny jokes and the silly drawings. He felt even better.
He heard another knock on the door. It was Lucy, his bossy neighbor. Lucy had a frown on her face and a clipboard in her hand. She barged into the room and said: "Charlie Brown, I'm here to collect your homework. You can't miss a day of school without doing your assignments. You have to write an essay, solve some math problems, and memorize some facts. Here, I'll help you. Let's start with the essay. The topic is: 'Why I love school.' Go ahead, write something."
Charlie Brown groaned. He felt worse. He looked at Lucy and said: "Lucy, can't you see I'm sick? I don't feel like doing homework. I need to rest. Can't you leave me alone?"
Lucy shook her head. She said: "No, Charlie Brown, I can't leave you alone. You have to do your homework. It's good for you. It will make you smarter and stronger. It will prepare you for the future. It will make you happy. Trust me, I know what's best for you."
Charlie Brown sighed. He felt terrible. He looked at Snoopy and said: "Snoopy, can you help me? Can you get rid of Lucy?"
Snoopy nodded. He got up and walked to the window. He opened it and stuck his head out. He saw a strong wind blowing outside. He saw leaves, papers, and hats flying in the air. He saw a kite stuck in a tree. He had an idea.
He grabbed the kite and pulled it down. He tied it to Lucy's clipboard. He threw the clipboard out the window. The wind caught it and lifted it up. Lucy's clipboard flew away, taking her homework with it.
Lucy gasped. She said: "Hey, what are you doing? That's my clipboard! That's my homework! Come back here, you stupid kite!"
She ran to the window and tried to catch the clipboard. She leaned out too far and lost her balance. She fell out of the window and landed on the ground. She was covered in dirt and leaves. She was angry and hurt.
She yelled: "Ow! Ouch! Help! Charlie Brown, you blockhead! Snoopy, you mutt! How could you do this to me? This is your fault! You owe me a new clipboard and a new homework! You'll pay for this!"
She got up and limped away, cursing and crying.
Charlie Brown watched her go. He felt relieved. He said: "Good grief, Lucy, you're a pain in the neck. You always make things worse. You don't know what's best for me. You don't make me happy. You make me miserable."
He closed the window and locked the door. He turned to Snoopy and said: "Snoopy, you're a genius. You saved the day. You know what's best for me. You make me happy. You're my best friend."
He hugged Snoopy and smiled. He felt better. He said: "Thank you, Snoopy. You're the best. You made this a good day after all. You know what they say: it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good."
Snoopy wagged his tail and smiled. He said: "Woof."
